I am intending to do topic 8 of the OBU and I have been having problems in have my request accepted by the companies I intend to study. I have tried to approach some management personnel of these companies but their have showed signs on unwillingness to grant permission for me to study their companies.
Can someone please help me with the right procedure and the design of the consent letter which I can you when approaching these companies. Some have been asking for a letter from the college.
January 15, 2016 at 8:25 am #294608bightsambo – you do not need any primary data or to meet with the management of a company in order to do T8. Particularly in Pakistan students are wrongly informed of this by misguided mentors – but it is categorically NOT necessary or required to have any interviews with anyone from company’s management. (Besides the managers are far too busy managing to be able to do this!)
You will have to select a company from one of the prescribed sectors on the list ( see our forum topic on Topic 8 & Topic 15 – P32 New Rules). Then you use their annual reports, particularly the CEO and Directors Reports and articles from the financial press or online business pages to help you uncover the strategies and factors that have influenced management decisions e.g. SWOT and PESTLE factors. You apply these models and then track them through when analysing your results.
You will need to get yourself a mentor from the OBU mentoring list but look at our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/OBU where we have articles on Evaluation and the OT Ultimate Guide to Referencing as these are the 2 most commonly failed areas. (I do not personally take on students for mentoring though but offer advice through the Forum).
January 15, 2016 at 8:52 am #294611Dear trephena, so if I understand you correctly there is a list about the registered OBU Mentors? Where and how can this list be accessed? I have been looking for a Mentor in my city for months and I cannot find any.
January 15, 2016 at 10:30 am #294617@Bolage -register on the OBU website http://www.oxfordbrookesmentoring.co.uk
(I think there is probably a link on accaglobal too)
You do not necessarily have to have a local mentor as many mentors use Skype. There are some mentors who post on our forums so you could enquire with any of these about their services. Some offer a range of packages. In this respect if you want a final critical read through of your work with marker type comments then you might possibly like to consider our recommended mentors The Learning Luminarium as not all mentors are experienced enough to offer this.
It really depends on your level of confidence, experience of report writing and budget as the more personal service you want, then the more mentor time it involves and of course the cost of providing this.
Shop around, ask questions and ask for an introductory short Skype session as you want to try to ensure before parting with any cash you actually like and can work with that mentor.
January 18, 2016 at 7:28 am #295538Dear bightsambo,
You can only use secondary source of data for your project. It is clearly mentioned in BSC INFO PACK 2015/16 Pg 39 “Many RAP topics, notably Topic 8, don’t require the collection and analysis of primary data. It is rare that primary data collection undertaken for Topic 8 enhances the analysis.” You don’t need any primary source of information.
Other Topics 6 and 17 require primary source of information, students need to meet with the management to collect information.
I advise you to select Public listed companies for your RAP because the amount of information is available online. Most of students to expect to be able to find information quickly and easily. You should do research smart and hard to obtain reliable information
Finally, you can not rely only on Annual Reports / CEO / Director Reports. You must use different sources during analysis such as Business newspapers, Press release, Chamber of Commerce, Regulator reports, State Bank Reports, Industry specific reports & any other reliable source.
If you need any further assistance, feel free to ask.
Regards,
Ali Farooq
BSC Registered MentorJanuary 25, 2016 at 10:07 am #297794All students should note (and @Ali Farroq too! ) that primarily data is not only unnecessary for Topic 17 it is NOT recommended at all – this is in line with comments made to me by the OBU marking team.
Do not undertake primary collection for Topics 8, 17 or 20 unless ABSOLUTELY necessary AND you know and have experience of conducting investigative interviews, questionnaires and surveys.
