    Hi,

Welcome to my first ever post. I use your website frequently and it has benefited me greatly, not least P7.

In relation to P4, this is my final exam and has caused plenty of pain. I have attempted this paper 5 times and failed each time. Each time, I have scored in the mid 40’s so not failing badly but this is of little comfort to me right now.

Is this something that you have seen before with a student and if so, what was his/her approach as this has now become a mental issue rather than an academical issue.

I am wrestling with myself if to sit this exam a sixth time in December although my right mind thinks I should.

My timing in the exam is not great but it is not too bad either so I dont put my failures down to this. I have never repeated an exam more than twice before so this is new to me.

Any feedback from the little background you have above would be much appreciated.

    Regards,
    -Colin

It is hard for me, obviously, to know what is going wrong, but I would guess that is more a question of your approach rather than lack of knowledge.

Do remember that (especially for question 1) there is rarely just one correct answer – it depends so much on the assumptions you make. That is why it is so important to state your assumptions, and also to set out your workings (as an appendix) in a way that it easy for the marker to follow – if it is clear that you are trying to do it the right way then you will get most of the marks, even if you make lots of mistakes (but if they can’t follow your workings and assumptions then they can’t give you the marks).

The best suggestion I can make (apart from obviously practicing as many questions as possible and not ignoring the written parts (there are far more written marks then most people realise) is to watch the recordings that I have made working through several of the recent question 1’s from past exams. I try to explain the best approach to the questions as well as obviously working through the calculations.

You can find them linked from this page:
    https://opentuition.com/acca/afm/afm-revision-lectures/

The fact that you are scoring in the mid-40’s obviously means that you should not give up hope (if you were scoring in the 20’s then things would be rather desperate). You will pass in December, but study hard – watch our main lectures again, read all the student accountant articles, practice every question you can find, and ask in this forum about anything you are not sure about.

Thank you for the response. I will pass this time and will respond to this in January when Results are out.

You are welcome, and I wish you all the very best for December.
Do ask in this forum if you come across anything that worries you 🙂
