Homer and Marge work for similar companies but a Marge’s company a mechanistic system of management exists, in contrast to the organic approach at Homer’s firm. They are discussing some of the characteristics of each system, which are outlined below.
(i) Managers are responsible for co-ordinating tasks
(ii) Insistence on loyalty to the organisation
(iii) Job description are less precise, it is harder to ‘pass the buck’.
(iv) Hierarchical structure of control in an impersonal organisationWhich three would Marge recognize from her workplace?
A. i, ii and iii
B. i, ii and iv
C. ii, iii and iv
D. i, iii and ivThe correct answer is B. But i can’t identify the difference between mechanistic system and organic approach system. So could you please explain about the differences between them.

Mechanistic = like a machine: very inflexible, strict performance criteria and little discretion. Good at repeating the same task
Organic = like a living organism. Not so good at repetition, but more flexible.
So (iii) is NOT a characteristic of Mechanistic as it suggests flexibility in the job description and won’t let people so easily say ‘It’s not my job’.
B is the only optoin where (iii) does not appear.
(ii) and (iv) are very mechanistic. I would suggest that under both systems managers are responsible for coordination (otherwise what is their puspose?)
