Hello all
Do employees recognise the acca exams? I live in London and got a degree in maths 15 years ago. 18 months ago I joined acca and have so far passed f1-f6 but I can’t get any kind of acca job not even an interview for any, so far in these 18 months I have just done three very simple finance admin/clerk roles which are so simple and not helpful.
If I give up this simple role and just focus on passing the other papers will an employee then hire me or am I wasting my time? For example if I don’t work again and pass the last eight papers will employees then offer me a job? I find doing these simple clerk roles depressing and not challenging at all. Thanks for any feedback

February 11, 2015 at 9:52 pm #227943Is it an age thing as I do have a good degree in maths and won awards while at school for maths and passed with good marks f1-f6 so why no interview for trainee or assistant accountancy roles? Do all employees just go for recent grads with accountancy/finance degrees.

I have just read through your post with interest. I am in a slightly similar position. I am 40yo with 2 children and I have passed F1-F8 and attempting F9 in summer. I have a Business Studies degree and have experience of working in purchasing, marketing, sales/Account Management along with finance monitoring in public sector. Whilst in university I was running a small self employed enterprise around my lectures and subsequently I narrowly missed out on a 2:1 degree and attained a 2:2. This was after having worked for 7 years as a Business Studies teacher in secondary school.
It has taken me a long tie to find my niche in life and I absolutely love working with figures, producing and analysing accounts but I am passionate about business too. I believe I have a good commercial acumen and coupled with my Accounting studies thought that I would be an attractive prospect for an employer but I have really struggled to gain a relevant position. I have the 3+ years time served experience in a relevant finance role but going forwards I need to have the experience relevant to studies with a mentor to enable me to meet the PER objectives.
I am plodding on regardless and continuing studies but feel disappointed that I have had a lack of interest. Is it down to my age? I am starting to wonder should I try registering with an agency for temp accounts positions to get my foot in the door so to speak.

Agencies so far have just got me temp roles doing basic stuff so not a role that will do for my PER or help me with the P1-P7 papers. Yes I have my foot in the door but then again you can say the cleaner has their foot in the door so not sure what use it is. Today spending it doing payroll all day so just 8 hours of data entry. I did get 69% in the tax exam so aim to go down that route but if employers wont even give me an interview then might not have that choice. Im just curiuos if I get say 70% plus in F7 and F9 will that make any difference?
