Decision time – Period 33 submission is about to open – so should you submit this period or defer to Period 34?
Here is a general checklist for you to work through to help you decide if you are ready or should defer to P34 (I have done checklist a specifically for T17 on the T17 Corporate Governance Forum and a separate one for T20 but read this one first then consult that for the fine details applicable to CG & CAR )
REMEMBER NOW YOU MUST USE AN OBU LISTED MENTOR TO VERIFY YOUR WORK. YOU WILL NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO UPLOAD YOUR WORK UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLIED WITH THIS
This info applies to all students considering submitting in Period 33
1. Have you really read all of the OBU instructions, guidelines, 2016/2017 information pack etc and understood the requirements? Have you satisfied all the criteria set out in the Info pack checklist ‘Appendix 8 -Research and analysis project checklist’?
2. Have you looked at the actual assessment criteria –Info Pack Appendix 1? (in particular are you SURE that you have avoided all those weaknesses shown in the Fail grade boxes)?
3. Are you satisfied that you have referenced fully and used a good range of sources? (e.g. not just the annual reports for Topic 8). Note: Information gathering and referencing (that is the lack of these) are the common reasons for failure…. Have you followed my Golden Rules? ( see article on our OBU homepage)
4. Remember RAP stands for ‘Research and ANALYSIS Project’ (you never find me using the abbreviation RR as it is NOT just a Research Report – in fact arguably the Analysis is more important!) – so have you covered both of these aspects adequately? Have you done more than just ‘describing’ things e.g. just commenting on the movements in the trends (again if submitting Topic 8)? This is not ‘analysis’ – you have to ‘add value’ to this by explaining what has driven the changes in these movements. If in doubt see my article on our homepage http://www.opentuition.com/obu
With Topics 17 & 20 have you done more than just stating what the company does with regard to the Codes/ practices? Have you OBJECTIVELY EVALUATED what they have done in relation to other companies and the codes? – are there some articles in the business press that question the integrity of the company perhaps?Don’t take absolutely everything you read in the annual report at face value – the directors are going to hype up the good points and ‘bury’ the bad news – your mission is to produce a BALANCED report so you need to dig out independent articles etc that either confirm the annual report statements or present a slightly different picture.
Topics 11 & 13 by the nature of the topic are often ‘heavy’ on research (describing the set up) and ‘light’ on analysis – so you need to ensure that you have been able to do some form of original analysis, constructive criticism and independent thinking of your own etc to satisfy the analysis criteria.5. Have you linked your models/ theories from Part 2 with the analysis in Part 3 e.g. the business and financial analyses are inter-connected (topic 8), motivation theories need to be applied in a company context (topic 6)? Assessment criteria 2 requires you to APPLY the models and theories not just state them, whatever topic you do.
6. Have you thoroughly understood the SLS requirements? (see Info Pack). If you don’t do adequate self-reflection you could fail. Imagine the frustration of not getting your degree and having to shell out another submission fee because you overlooked the SLS!!! There are 3 things you need to include in answering the 4 questions in the SLS – Self-reflection, self-reflection and self-reflection! (There are no right or wrong answers to the SLS but there are right or wrong approaches. It is supposed to be based on self-evaluation and reflection about what you learned and its possible use for the future. Just stating you did this, you did that etc is not self-reflection. Neither is being vague about what you have learned from the experience and the mentor – be specific give as many examples as possible– you might even use the Open Tuition forum as an example of how it made you approach the RAP, SLS etc and made you think about what academic research analysis and effective communication means – now there’s a thought!!!)
For students resubmitting PARTICULARLY IF THIS IS YOUR THIRD AND FINAL ATTEMPT
7. Have you read and really understood the feedback and reasons you failed last time?
8. Have you gone through the latest Resubmission Guidelines / Info Pack?
9. Have you listed out each of the points you failed on and shown what you have done to correct the deficiencies in your Resubmission Statement? (if you are required to submit one – see the Resubmission Guide) NOTE: the Resubmission statement in my opinion is intended to help you pass, rather than just another bureaucratic hoop to leap through. I think its purpose is to try to help you recognise what you need to focus on and correct. If you don’t spend time on examining the reasons why you failed and addressing the problems then you are wasting your time and money in resubmitting!
10. Have you complied with points 1 – 6 above where applicable?
And finally
11. Do you have someone who can objectively read through your work and make constructive criticism where required? If you have a GOOD mentor they will probably do this for you but if not, a knowledgeable friend or colleague perhaps? Remember though this is intended to be an exercise to help you get that pass grade so don’t take objective criticism too personally…. They are only trying to HELP you! Ask them can they follow the arguments and reasoning, is it lacking anything? Does it contain too many numbers (without adequate graphs and charts) so that they keep having to re-read bits to take it all in? Is it boring in parts (ask them to be honest!) and are there ways it could be made more interesting (e.g. chopping out long paragraphs, putting in a bit more line spacing, adding some graphics)12. Ensure that you have uncorrupted copies of your whole RAP submission files available in case your submission versions prove to be corrupted (if OBU can’t open the files, then it can’t be marked!! – so I would suggest saving a couple of copies on different flash drives ‘just in case’).
13. To ensure you load the correct versions of your files – either delete older versions/ append FINAL to the file name / keep them on a separate USB stick. Once files have been uploaded and submission confirmed they are ‘on their way’ and you will have no further access to them. My understanding is that OBU will only allow a recall in very exceptional circumstances ( and I bet they just ‘ love’ students when they have to interrupt the process for a ‘manual’ recall!! )
File formats: RAP & SLS – must be in Word and spread sheet file must be Excel – NO pdf versions for these are allowed ( although the system may accept them they will be rejected for marking at that stage). Appendices, Reference list and anything else can be pdf. The Presentation file would normally be PowerPoint – the details and file size limits are in the Info Pack.
Make sure you sort out your login-details and write your pass word down – it may be too late on 16 November if you encounter problems so ensure you can login and have the details to hand before then (and you will need the same details to login in March 2017 to get your results).
If you can answer YES to all of that and implemented 12 & 13 then in my opinion you are probably ready to submit!
One final piece of advice – check and DOUBLE CHECK your submission confirmation that lists out exactly which files you have submitted – especially if you do it at the 11th hour on 16th November. Apparently OBU will not accept errors and omissions by a student after the deadline – so if you loaded the SLS twice in error and didn’t load the RAP at all and you don’t notify them of the error and reload the correct files BY THE DEADLINE then that’s it. (I appealed on behalf of a student and was told that if they allowed students to resubmit a correct file after the deadline, in effect they would be extending the deadline for some students – like those who might have deliberately misloaded files to gain a bit more time). It’s harsh for those who genuinely messed up, but those are the rules – so you have been warned – so make sure it doesn’t happen to you!
For those who can’t answer YES to everything above before 16th November then you are probably better off deferring as your chances of passing are likely to be compromised. If you are facing your final re-submission you are advised to ensure that you really have done everything you can to get that C grade before you go ahead and submit as it is better to defer for 6 months (unless you are about to be time-barred) and get an BSc (Hons) then go ahead with something that is deficient and end up with nothing…
Just a few final things to ponder over if you are unsure whether to submit or defer to P34:
You want a BSc (Hons) and you want it now (yesterday would have been even better)! Results won’t come out until March 2017 so deferral now means you won’t get your degree until Autumn 2017 at the earliest. But what if your RAP is a bit borderline – you don’t feel very confident about the analysis? but some of your friends managed to get a C, so maybe you might be just be lucky to scrape through… But if you don’t, what then? The reality would be you would have the extra expense of another submission fee (£250 for Period 34) and then there is the psychological aspect of failure – how will you cope with the inevitable questions from colleagues / family / friends? Failure knocks your self-esteem – let’s face it no one wants to fail – could you cope with that nasty four letter word when you get your results and it is staring you in the face – FAIL ? (And remember if you fail the first time you can never get a grade higher than a C however good your resubmission).Only you can decide whether you submit but I suggest that you ask yourself a few basic questions to help you with this important decision. Obviously if you are about to be time-barred its submit or bust, so just do it by the deadline – you have nothing to lose – however do read the points above before you press the submit button – they are intended to help you get that all important C grade (or above if it is your first submission)!
One final thing: Don’t bother submitting unless you have done the work yourself – the marking team are trained to spot attempts at cheating and Turnitin can match student work that is broadly the same. The ACO are getting quite good at spotting duplicated Prsentations, templates spreadsheets and know that some unscrupulous mentors are either writing reports or providing templates – the reason several mentors have been banned (and have heard all the student excuses and protestations of innocence before) The ACO deals with cases of suspicious work and you can be referred to ACCA -it really isn’t worth jeopardisng your future and in addition an ACO investigation causes a lot of undue stress as students on the ACO Forum attest. There is also a penalty resubmission fee of GBP 550 for anyone wanting to resubmit who has been found guilty of Misconduct. If you don’t have the time to complete your work the solution is simple – defer until P34.
So only one thing left now from me and fellow moderator Ehsan and that’s to wish ‘Good luck’ to everyone!
Trephena
PS Don’t forget to return to our Forum in March to tell us how you got on – and remember we are always delighted when students who have passed return to post here and help other students. Our ethos is to try to give a bit back and share our knowledge – as Moderators we don’t want anyone who is deserving, hardworking and capable to miss out on getting their BSc. Good luck again 😀

November 9, 2014 at 6:52 am #208518Hello Trephena,
Should I complete the Research and Analysis Project checklist (appendix 6).I mean should I put a tick besides each point in the checklist if I satisfy them and save it and submit it to the OBU.?
Plz help.
Thnks for ur support.
November 9, 2014 at 7:32 am #208523@tanvi2211 – No – the OBU checklist is a reminder to students of some of the basic errors that have been made by students in the past that have either meant a fail or needed the OBU admin office to have to contact the student to clear up. So it’s purpose is too avoid both of these situations – if you have complied with it then that’s that! 🙂
November 9, 2014 at 10:16 am #208540The OBU interface says I have to enter my mentor details. However, I am not yet ready to submit. Can I just fill in the mentor details now and submit later? Or is it all supposed to be done together? Will OBU contact my mentor now or after I submit the project to confirm she are mentoring me?
Thanks in advance
November 9, 2014 at 3:32 pm #210782Which payment methods are acceptable for the submission of RAP?
please mention the names. (e.g: Paypall, MasterCard, Visa etc)
November 9, 2014 at 3:32 pm #208634While saving my rap file, should I do save as … Word document or compatibility 1997- 2003?
Plz advise.Thanks
November 9, 2014 at 6:43 pm #208683@avian will – I believe so. I think it should retain your mentor details against your record. OBU randomly check mentor details and will in some cases contact the mentor to verify that they have seen the student’s presentation. Where a mentor is not an ACCA member you should have sought permission to use the mentor by forwarding his/her CV to OBU. From P30 all mentors must be OBU registered so prior permission will not be required.
November 10, 2014 at 8:59 am #208748@tanvi2211 – Latest version of Word -the same one you used to write it surely? Earlier versions wouldn’t support some of the functions and formatting so it would mess everything up. Not sure why you would think of saving it to 1997 – that is prehistoric in technology terms!!!! (Latest versions can deal with earlier versions to a certain extent but not v.v. as by definition the older versions coming first are not programmed to deal with more recent software developments)
November 10, 2014 at 2:56 pm #208822about file size limits, in the info pack it says the total size of submitted files is 10mb but how can you upload financial statements within that size limit because most of them are coloured pdf files and for example for the company i’m doing rap even parts of it like notes to accounts for single year are in 5-15mb range. any advice on this?
November 10, 2014 at 6:32 pm #208894@sameed – you only have to copy and scan the financial statements and not the full annual report and all the notes etc.
November 10, 2014 at 7:13 pm #208899@trephena but in my analysis i have also taken information from notes to the account
November 10, 2014 at 8:51 pm #208910@sameed – I trust your analysis goes deeper than the notes as explaining things in terms of the notes to the accounts will not normally be adequate to pass E & A. It is not a requirement to upload all of your data sources so not including the notes is not critical
November 10, 2014 at 9:27 pm #208916@trephena thanks and yes of course it goes deeper than thatthat. Thanks for clarifying that i don’t have to include the notes.
November 12, 2014 at 1:17 pm #209352I have had to type out my financial statements in excel as I had physical copies and the accounts were not categorised between current and non current, so I had to retype them to assist me in my ratio calculations. Do I still have to scan the physical annual report or can I just upload my excel files?
November 12, 2014 at 4:05 pm #209389@denmaster – just the excel files will do normally. Provide the link to the full set in the reference list

@trephena
hi mate
how r u doing?
its not enough to say thank u . u r really completely different from others. u r replying every single query by giving ur time.
I would like to ask u told me as I m doing topic 8 and Tesco is my main company to talk about recent problem but overstatement it did not announce between annual report 2012 to 2014. but the investigation by deloitte found some of the figures relate to 2012 and 2013. so how should I discuss and where to discuss this issue ?
I am confused totally
can u give some guidance and clue regarding it ?
thank u againNovember 12, 2014 at 10:13 pm #209492@ts1110 – You do your RAP in the normal way and address evaluation and explain things as best you can. You then insert a final paragraph saying that you are aware of issues that have, occurred since July that seriously call into question the profits of Tesco not just in the current year but potentially prior years. However until the FCA and SFO reports are available it will be impossible to discuss the full implications of these on the company performance but the indications are that the profits have been significantly overstated and the share price has fallen dramatically as a consequence of this.
Look at my postings on ‘Doing your RAP on Tesco’, read the articles and reference your update paragraph accordingly
November 15, 2014 at 5:48 pm #210275@musemma – you have obviously not been reading my posts on T17 otherwise you would have been advised that graphs and charts break up the text, make your work more interesting and are a great way to save on the word count. I trust you have presented your work well as in our FAQs an OBU marker made a comment along the lines of ‘There is nothing more daunting that being confronted with a whole page of text knowing that there are better and more effective ways the student could have presented their work.’
However to answer your query: I understand that as software includes PowerPoint provided you have used this reasonably well that will pass the IT requirements.
Seriously though I suggest you make life easier for the marker and do as they suggest and break up your text – remember there is a category of failure ‘Presentation of the Findings’ and ‘just analysis, analysis and analysis’ could land you with a Fail in that box
November 16, 2014 at 8:37 am #210328Hi There!!!
What could be the possible problem that i am not able to upload the presentation though it’s in ppt format.
November 16, 2014 at 8:55 am #210335Hi,
Just want to know, have you been able to choose ur ppt file when browsing? IF it is yes, then u’ll have to select ” All files instead of Custom files. It is then you’ll see all ur doc. and be able to choose ur file. and then it’ll be fine.
Otherwise, maybe the file size is too much for the ppt.
November 16, 2014 at 9:08 am #210342I am not able to choose the ppt file because and it doesn’t give an option of choosing all files. The file size is 922kb.
November 16, 2014 at 9:28 am #210359Hi, ur file size is ok bcoz mine ws 1134 kB.
wen u click on the “choose file” on the OBU website, another window/box will open n u will have to select ur file. and u’ll see there is no file for u to attach. right??? Then in the same window, u’ll see at the bottom of the right side of this box, u’ll see ‘custom files’. Click on it and then select ” All files”. It is then u can select ur ppt file and attach. ok
Hope thats work for u.
November 17, 2014 at 8:12 pm #210783Dear @ts1110,
I saw in other topic that you have submitted the RAP. would you please response. Its quite urgent as i have to manage a source if paypal is not acceptable.Dear @trephena, if you know someone who have submitted the RAP please response. I search a lot regarding this issue but there is no information anywhere.
Thank you
November 17, 2014 at 8:46 pm #210788@tarek1620 – In the Information pack it says:
“You pay on-line, when you submit your project. Payment can be made using a credit
or debit card. If you do not have a credit or debit card, you can send us a banker’s
draft. Please contact us at: acca@brookes.ac.uk for further details.”I think this last sentence means about sending a banker’s draft. I doubt very much that PayPal is a facility that they use.
