Hello, I am resubmitting RAP and this is my last period. I have failed due to referencing as I didn’t cite the text I referenced in the reference list. And also due to ratio analysis. I wanted to know, Will I need to update my SWOT analysis as well or should it stay as it is? I am asking this because I failed in March 2014. I missed period 28 to allow myself to complete ACCA and financial difficulties. Now I am ready to work on it in this period. So should my SWOT by updated?
Secondly, I have been reading about introduction of new rules for mentors. Does this apply to me as well?September 8, 2014 at 5:06 pm #194338@Haider Ijaz First off you must ensure that you use the latest financial statements – the latest that were available in the public domain by 1 Aug 2014. As this is your final attempt you really have got to give it your best shot so I suggest that you read the CEO/Directors’ reports in the financial statements (for the last few years) and then go back to your SWOT. These particular reports often outline strategies that are built on strengths and overcoming weaknesses and therefore they will be an indication for you whether you should update your SWOT or not. They will also be useful when it comes to your financial analysis and doing a proper evaluation.
If I am not much mistaken you did not fail so much on your ratio analysis (unless you missed out a whole bunch of ratios or failed to include many for the comparator) but more on your evaluation and there is a bit of a difference here. I am in the process of writing an article for our Web pages on Evaluation (as it is such a common cause of failure) which I hope will help students understand how to approach this to fulfil the assessment criteria. The article should be available within the next few days – so again it is vital you read it to understand the correct approach.
Regarding a mentor for P29 you do not have to have a listed mentor but they are still expected to conform to the 2013/2014 rules on being either an ACCA member etc or if not you will still need to seek approval from OBU (either see the 2013/2014 information pack or my article on our home page about Mentors as it contains the current rules for P29)
September 8, 2014 at 6:33 pm #194349First of all thanks alot for such a detailed reply. Secondly, my mentor was approved by OBU. I read info pack and I found out that I do not need to change my mentor as my SLS is passed.
Also, yes you are write. I failed on the evaluation part. They said I hadn’t considered the wider economic environment. My analysis is on Apple and it’s financial statements won’t be available until at the end of October probably.September 8, 2014 at 7:30 pm #194366@Haider Ijaz – ‘the wider economic environment’ – that means two things – (a) you did not relate your analysis to this – and essentially that means that you did not really link your SWOT (and/or PESTLE) and financial analysis – again another reason why you need to revisit your SWOT and (b) you probably relied too heavily on company information and did not balance this by using articles from the business & trade press.
Incidentally the next article after Evaluation that I am drafting is “Marker-Speak – How to understand what the Marker really meant in their Feedback” – and interestingly I had included “wider environment” (though admittedly not wider ‘economic’ environment) as one of the terms that needed to be explained. This is planned to be available by Results day so that students who have failed can decipher their feedback! 😀
