Why does any students RAP or SLS fails apart from plagiarism issues. all other problems in a report why aren’t pointed by mentor before submission.
I guess thats a mentors job to point the lackings and ask the mentee to rectify.March 25, 2014 at 9:12 pm #163057Funny question. Mentor job is to take money from you.
March 26, 2014 at 5:53 am #163110Well i guess that could be a possibility.Because its like you are giving a paper and its checked by well qualified professional before submission.

I did’nt receive result via email yet, but in my account there is a letter and its shows that my RAP is under further investigation, what does it means? and what is the likely outcome.
Can anybody please tell me?
March 26, 2014 at 6:35 am #163115i dint receive my result too 🙁 . i received a letter as well saying that its under investigation. why is that so . did this happen to anyone else ??
March 26, 2014 at 12:10 pm #163166@Sara same happen to me i m so worried ……i m positive that i will pass
March 26, 2014 at 1:29 pm #163182I was going to submit my RAP this time around, but due to work issues, I’m going to submit in November. It seems hard to find out why reports fail, so I thought I’d create a little online form to collect the marker feedback.
Here’s the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1hyXO-mPZb2WrFFcLI_WeTjinTHRzAxqhzkvu6TfI4TM
If you failed, put your marker reasons in this form. I’ll then post a summary on this forum for all to see.
March 26, 2014 at 2:52 pm #163199NEENA……u have to go through the FORUM posts, many students have detailed reasons for their failures
March 26, 2014 at 3:15 pm #163202@neena My mentor is my line manager… if I fail, am I supposed to blame him?!
If I fail, it’s my fault, no one else’s. If I decide at a later stage to maybe get a paid mentor (if I change job), all I’d expect them to do is attend the three meetings, give me some general advice/feedback/encouragement and signoff at the end. If I was lucky enough that they had some previous experience mentoring, then great. But no way I’d blame them, not unless they gave me some crazy advice or something…. but even then, it’s my choice what I submit.
March 26, 2014 at 5:56 pm #163228@kolapopson No lol not just for me 🙂 Check my forum post called “OBU Failure… lets all learn from it!” I’ll post the results there in like a week or so once everyone has time to respond.

Mentors are professionals knowing very well what attributes of a passing report should be.We aren’t aware of that.and the i am making is why don’t mentors identify lackings before submissions that OBU points out.Obviously mentors do review ur work before u submit it.March 27, 2014 at 11:24 am #163317NEENA…..one of my best friends prepared his report with a mentor from KAPLAN in UK, i.e. face to face instead of online……..my friend got his result saying that you have not referenced and cited your work that is why we have failed you…….my friend said to me that had he been guided by his mentor (about referencing and some other minor issues also), had he not made such mistakes, 😀 ….. so sometimes MENTOR might not guide you, but thats what this forum is here for 😀 read the posts, then ask each other if something is still not clear and super important you MUST read the OBU info pack COMPLETELY, that is vital :))
March 27, 2014 at 11:46 am #163321@neena Mentors aren’t tutors or markers… they are just people (not necessarily even ACCA qualified) that basically just signoff at the end that they think it’s your work and that you attended three meetings etc. They have no idea what the marking scheme is. It’s our job to assess our own work. Like @SalahUddin wisely says, if you read the information pack and follow all the things that OBU expect, then you should be in good shape.
Blaming mentors is just an easy excuse…
March 27, 2014 at 12:06 pm #163323Gene……. Actually it is quite NATURAL for us that when our mentor says, SALAHUDDIN you DON’t need to reference that, u dont need to write that,…..to AUTOMATICALLY BELEIVE the MENTOR :D……..Now, We cannot blame the Mentor BECAUSE, OBU info pack very clearly (indirectly) states that mentor is not at all for helping you out in your RAP, if he does that is his good heart, MENTOR’s job is only to sign off at the end and have 3 meetings (as gene has said)……. 😀 Have fun Period 28
March 27, 2014 at 12:13 pm #163327@SalahUddin Sounds like you have a crazy/bad mentor! Why would any mentor give such advice? Maybe you need to find a mentor who has actually passed the degree themselves and knows what they are talking about! 🙂
March 27, 2014 at 12:20 pm #163330😀 wish we can ask them….please show me your degree…….. 😀
March 27, 2014 at 12:42 pm #163333@gene and SalahUddin then whats the point of paying money to mentors.and i have gone through the information pack i donot find it enough for making a pass grade report.
March 27, 2014 at 1:22 pm #163340Ok NEENA now that you have the info pack, read the Exemplars given by OBU on their website, then read some of the sample reports that are in the OBU group here on Opentuition, then to avoid mistakes in your RAP, start reading the posts that are in the OBU forum here on opentuition, (keep taking notes of the points u think are important), Now then, start makling your report. Walaaa 😀 Done
March 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm #163344@neena so I think you are finally getting the point… there is MASSIVE difference between a Mentor and a Tutor. What you’re paying for with a mentor is for them to attend three meetings and signoff on your RAP. They are not supposed to spoon feed you everything throughout the process. A degree is about independent research and learning to think for yourself. I currently have a workplace mentor, but like I said, if I change job (which hopefully I will soon!) I’ll consider paying for a mentor so that I can keep the degree separate from work.
The information pack isn’t great, but it’s all we have. If you want more, then you can get the BPP/Kaplan books, read this forum and search on Google for other resources. Just be careful who/what you take advice from/on. Good luck!
March 28, 2014 at 6:43 am #163425@ gene
i understand the difference btw a tutor and mentor. i donot want that mentor should spoon feed.all the work should be done by the students.THE ONLY THING I WANT THE MENTORS TO DO IS THAT THEY SHOULD REVIEW THE RAP PROPERLY PRIOR TO SUBMISSION WHICH I DO NOT THINK THEY REALLY DO.that is why a submitted report fails and OBU says that it lacked it skills, professional skills, referencing issues etc etc……….March 28, 2014 at 7:19 am #163427I still think you’re missing the point. For you it seems review the RAP properly means point out everything that stops it from being 100% mark. How can a mentor do that? They don’t have access to a marking scheme and as I’m sure you’re aware, reports rarely ever get more than 80%. Spoon feeding is telling the student where they have gone wrong and exactly what they need to change and fix.
How do you know what mentors do or don’t do? You’re making accusations, but where are your facts? Have you failed in the past or something and think it’s your mentors fault? If you’re just going off what people on this forum say, remember that unfortunately people have a tendency to want to blame others and not to take responsibility themselves. In life, if you want to be successful, you have to take control. This degree is supposed to teach us how to be independent learners, make sure you don’t miss this important lesson.
March 28, 2014 at 8:17 am #163431no i haven’t submitted yet.so not failed
March 28, 2014 at 10:02 am #163443The best mentors are ex-teachers and ex-lecturers who have an accountancy background – as they are probably the only ones who can successfully combine the tutor/mentor role. They understand what the academics want and are skilled in recognising student mistakes and are fully aware of the rules of referencing. Most teachers/lecturers in the adult public sector in the UK also hold NVQ assessor awards and therefore understand the full background and requirements of the SLS which most mentors don’t. As for Kaplan lecturers as a mentor – probably some are too geared to exam preparation rather than report writing – but that doesn’t mean that they are all poor at mentoring (but as they work in the private sector they do not usually have the NVQ assessor qualification). I think I would ask for a free preliminary 5 minute face-to-face meeting (or skype) with any potential mentor before I handed over any money as you have to feel comfortable and believe that they are really interested in you as opposed to just your money!
March 28, 2014 at 1:10 pm #163479@Anna……. In my opinion Anna has helped a lot of students and she also knows quite a lot about various things related to RAP…… I would say she is one of the best mentors out there :D………. On her website she also has very helpful articles (which answer a lot of questions related to the RAP)……………You got an A grade! thats wonderful!….. I got a B grade but they diidn’t tell me why……how can i know the reasons?
March 28, 2014 at 1:25 pm #163481@SalahUddin Thank you very much!!!
I don’t think there is a way to find out why we got the grades we got. The main thing is that we passed and that is a great achievement in itself 🙂
