Interview with Ruby, June 2015 F4 Genius Hunt Winner, who scored 90%

rubynPlease tell us in which country you live, and what work do you do.

My name is Hong Ngoc ( Ruby). I’m from Viet Nam but currently living and working in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I’m working as the Assistant Internal Auditor for Gloria Jean’s Coffees (Cambodia), ltd.

How much time each week did you spend studying, on average?

On average I spend about 8 hours every week studying ACCA. About 2-3 weeks before exam I sacrifice more time though.

Which study resources did you use?

I have been using BPP materials and Open Tuition materials available on the website throughout my study

Did you get support from your firm?

No I didn’t, I am pursuing ACCA at my own expense. I believe it will be very helpful for my career.

What was your approach to your studying?

My approach is that I always try to finish reading text book first, make sure I understand the logics and concepts first before moving on to practice questions.

While doing the question, if there is a anything that confuses me, I will refer back to text book and note it down. Then I use mind-map to sum up the main points.

To be safe, I also ask for help from OT tutors by posting questions in the forum. They are wonderful and always explain things very carefully in the most simple way.

I also spend time watching the lecture videos on OT after reading text book. It helps me understand further what I’ve read and I do think that they are great. Very well focused on the important topics.

What would you say was the most important factor that helped you to achieve such a high mark?

Personally, the most important factor that helped me to pass the exam is a proper preparation. You need to cover every topic because ACCA tends to test as much of the syllabus as possible, especially for multiple choice questions, they can ask about small things that most students normally ignore while studying.

Another important thing is time management, especially for written papers. Time management is one of the very important exam techniques, I never let myself stuck in one question, you have to move on to finish others and come back when you have time.

How did you find out about OpenTuition, and which of our resources did you use?

I found OT while searching for some ACCA related materials. I’m so glad that I found OT, this has been helping me a lot with my ACCA.

I use OT videos for my study, and also ” Ask the tutors” forum. I know I can totally trust the answers from there. I woukd like to express my deepest thank to OT for being there to help ACCA students like me.

      Hi My,

I have the F4 materials but they’re not VNM variant as I took UK variant. I used BPP books together with Open Tuition lectures and I found it detailed enough to pass the exam.

If you plan to take UK variant I can share the material, but VNM I’m sorry I can’t be any help to you. Best luck on your ACCA journey! 🙂

        Hi Ruby,
        Thanks for your reply.
When I ask Mr. Mike about F4, he say that UK variant and VNM variant has only difference in Civil Code, so I can based on UK variant to study.
Pls share me the material with my email: my**********@***il.com
A big thanks for you ^^.
By the way, have u studied F6, u choose UK variant too?

        Hi,

I will send you F4 to your mail, please check later today and remind me if I forget :P. I took F4 UK variant because I know all other variants also developed from the UK law. A lot of principles in UK cases are applied in other countries as well.

F6 I already passed 2 sittings ago, I also self-studied the UK variant 🙂 But for F6, if you work in VN then it’s better to consider taking VNM variant. Material may be difficult to find, but it’s more relevant to your work I think 🙂

        Hi,
So if in F4, I can choose UK variant, is that ok? Cause I read somewhere ” u choose UK when u intended to work there”.
I can choose UK for F4 and VNM for F6?
In F6, I need to read the law of VAT, PIT, CIT right, anything else?
I got a bunch of question to ask, haha, sorry if it makes u disturb
I see that u come back to VN, how long have u been here, I m in HCM too

      • Ruby says

        October 29, 2015 at 8:10 am

Yes you can choose any variant you want. F4 UK, F6VNM is okay. Any combination is not a problem. When you register for the exam, for papers that have different variants, you just choose which variant you would like to take.

I do not intend to work in the UK. My aim is to pass ACCA so I just choose whatever is the most convenient, because for F4 and F6 UK I could use BPP material as well as OT. If I chose VNM variant it would be difficult for me to find enough materials, and if I have any questions I don’t know anybody to ask :P. You haven’t registered for Dec. exam yet? :O Are you going to take any papers this Dec?

For F6 which variant are you going to take? Just have a look at the syllabus and you will know what you will need to read and cover.

I will be in HCMC for at least a year.

As you say, I think VNM variant for F6 is suitable for me n for my work in future. Thanks for your advice.
I am just in prepared step, I am not ready for the exam in Dec. I plan it for next year exam.
If we have chance, I hope we can hang out together, really wanna hear your sharing about ur experience in ACCA test, the rate 72% is definitely impressed me. I am living in HCM too.

    Dear Ms. Hong Ngoc (Ruby),
I am also a Vietnamese like you.
I am a fresh graduate of RMIT Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), in Economics and Finance.

Could I ask you a small question, please?

    1. Do you study ACCA by yourself only with OpenTuition materials, or you study ACCA at ACCA Centers such as FTMSGlobal.edu.vn and SmartTrain.edu.vn, and OpenTuition is just a learning support to you?

I would like to know this, because I am planning to study ACCA by myself only with OpenTuition community.

I am wonder whether my plan is realistic or not.

Please answer me if you feel comfortable about this question.
Finally, I would like to say great congratulations to you on this success !

You should be proud of yourself, and be praised by many other ACCA students, especially the Vietnamese.

      Hi Thang,

Regarding your question, I’ve been studying ACCA mostly by self-study. I did take classes at FTMS (Cambodia) for 4 papers. The rest I self-study using BPP materials (both text book and revision kit), together with open tuition. My average from F1 – P2 is 72% (so far, as I still have 3 papers left) And yes you are right, OT is a learning support to me, I found the “Ask the Tutors” forum very helpful, and their lectures are wonderful!

I do believe you can self study all ACCA papers, it is totally feasible, as long as you have discipline and proper learning method with good study materials (I’ve always used BPP and I think it’s quite detailed). Understanding the topics, practicing lots of questions and having good exam techniques will guarantee you a pass. 🙂

However, studying at any learning centers with the help of teachers is much more beneficial to any ACCA student, because they can give you advice on exam techniques as well as guiding you on difficult topics when you have questions. But if you don’t have time to go to learning center, Open Tuition is definitely a great choice. Just watch the videos, any questions you can post in the forum and the tutors will reply you very promptly.

I have just moved back to Ho Chi Minh City, please let me know if I can be any help to you!

      Regards,

      Ruby
