    Bpp says
The project sponsor provides and is accountable for the resources invested into the project and is 12/09 responsible for the achievement of the project’s business objectives.

The project owner is the person for whom the project is being carried out and as such, they are interested in the end result being achieved and their needs being met.

And in the end also says: Some organisations use the terms project owner and project sponsor in a way exactly opposite to the usage we have outlined here! An example is the Scottish Executive construction works procurement guidance, which makes the project owner subordinate to the investment decision-maker and superior to the project sponsor. Be careful in your use of these terms and explain what you mean when you use them.

What do you suggest in this case?

If different organisations interpret sponsors and ownership differently you mustn’t try to insist there is only one set of definitions. Organisations are free to use their own terminology.

Stick with BPP’s original definition and you will do fine.
